After the December 23 Earthquakes, I have shifted my practice to ProMed Doctors, one block away at 933 Colombo Street (beside the 24 Hour Surgery carpark). I’m very grateful to have been able to shift in there so quickly.
I’ll be sharing a room with another doctor, so will only be working there for half days – Monday and Tuesday afternoons, Wednesday mornings, and Thursday and Friday afternoons. I’ll also be able to work some Saturday mornings.

It is a very nice practice, with lovely people, and very good systems, and I have taken to computerised notes easily. The homeopathic part of the practice can’t be adapted to the MedTech software, unfortunately, so I am still keeping some paper records. Most of my paper files are away being scanned at present, although CQ can courier round patient charts for me when I need them.
My patients have been very supportive of the change. One lady said “I’m so pleased you are out of The Light House – I didn’t feel it was safe.” When I replied that it was kind of her to think about my safety, she said “No it’s my safety I was talking about, not yours!” Some people have said that they miss the pictures, elephants and teddy bears, but I’m gradually taking a few in.
People have said that they missed the ambience of the garden and the big old house, but paradoxically I find it easier working in the smaller venue. I am grateful to have been the custodian of The Light House for so long, for having it as a venue, and for all the projects that it inspired, but I feel its time to move on now.
The house feels tired, and is certainly sagging a bit. Last year I was told that it was probably for demolition, but, like so many other people in Christchurch, I am still waiting for official confirmation. I expect that when it is inspected by EQC it will be red stickered. And yes, I do have some dreams and ideas for the section, and for a possible rebuild with others, but I am taking one day at a time, and following my guidance, which right now is in the direction of simplification.
Actually, I have the name The Light House(R) as a trademark now, and I’ve said for a few years that many of The Light House(R) activities could shift on to another venue, or online. Anyway, thank you for coming in to see me, and I look forwards to seeing you again soon. I’ll keep you informed about changes and updates with my practice.
